How Poster House Expanded Its Wikipedia Presence — and Learned to Do It Themselves
When New York’s Poster House opened in 2019, it made history as the first museum in the U.S. dedicated to poster art. But by 2024, its Wikipedia article hadn’t kept up.
The existing page was focused on the museum’s early days, missing updated coverage from its post-COVID reopening, and lacking key details about its growing collection, exhibitions, and special initiatives.
That’s when Poster House partnered with Lumino.
We helped the museum refresh and expand the article to reflect its evolution. That included:
Renaming and rewriting the “Building and Collection” section into a comprehensive History overview
Adding sections on the Collection and Select exhibitions to spotlight the museum’s holdings and notable shows
Creating a Special projects section to include initiatives like #CombatCOVID and Chinatown Stories, with room to grow as new projects launch
And this wasn’t just a one-time "band-aid" fix. The Poster House team wanted to understand how they could propose updates on their own in the future to ensure the article stayed accurate and up-to-date. To that end, we first trained their staff on conflict-of-interest best practices and then coached them on how to engage directly with Wikipedia’s editor community to suggest updates transparently. This meant that once our engagement was complete, Poster House still had the training and tools to seek updates on their own going forward.
Now, the Poster House Wikipedia article offers readers around the world a more complete, accurate, and encyclopedic picture of the museum’s mission and work.
